Rusinga Island Camp Lake
Victoria is known for its abundance of exotic
birds and huge Nile Perch. Caught daily, these
fish have been known to weigh as much as 200
lbs.!
For those who choose not
to fish there are many things to do: Walk
to the famous archaeological site where Dr.
Mary Leakey discovered Proconsul Africanus,
now Heseloni, said to be 1.75 million years
old. Visit the Luo fishing village along the
shore and feel yourself transplanted back
in time. A wide stretch of lush lawn grows
to the waters edge. There are a few huge trees
and a wonderful open-sided thatched lounge
area, three beautiful rustic cottages and
a jetty stretching out into the lake.
Rusinga Island Camp,
run by the Roberts family, seems to be home
to about a million birds, and along the shore
you are likely to see otters and giant monitor
lizards. Reached by charter flight from the
Masai Mara, the Rusinga Island Camp
with its large comfortable cottages and superb
vistas over the lake is a real treat.
