Olerai Camp
Location: Lake Naivasha

Hosts: Iain and Oria Douglas-Hamilton

Olerai, is an enchanting country home on a beautiful farm in Africa. Painted ochre-red, it nestles under yellow acacia trees and purple jacarandas and is fanned by a cool breeze from the shores of Lake Naivasha and is watched over in the far distance by the extinct blue volcano of Mount Longonot. As welcoming as it is exclusive, Olerai is a house of sunshine, crisp colored cottons, and country flowers. There are seven luxury double bed rooms each with their own bathroom. It is the perfect place to start your safari in Africa.

On arrival, guests usually love to explore their new home and grounds, meet the staff, pop into the kitchen to taste some of the fresh farm food, walk out onto the open farm fields to the lake edge where a hippo may be dozing and have lunch in the shade of the tall acacia trees. Later in the afternoon, you can stroll among the zebras and sip sundowners at one of Kenya’s historical sites. Then back for a piping hot shower and delicious early supper by the crackling fire. Olerai House has a reputation for its delicious food and hospitality. Baskets of mixed salads and vegetables are freshly picked and cooked each day.

Excursions and walks around Lake Naivasha are breathtaking. There are also visits to Hell’s Gate National Park or take a walk to Colville’s Hill for a little taste of Kenya’s White Mischief! There are no rigid time-tables at Olerai House and guests do not have to rise at dawn and leap into a car. However, fish eagles and sunshine beckon guests outside for an early morning walk or swim in the pool and then back for those famous Olerai breakfasts, before setting out across the lake to wander around Crescent Island, a special treat, where multiple birds, giraffe, water buck, and wildebeests greet you on arrival.

Lunch is set up on the lakeshore and the spectacular view is another surprise. Afternoon boat rides to see hippos, or a return trip by car stopping off at some delightful shops with local crafts, or to watch a game of polo at Sanctuary Farm and then a cup of tea at Elsamere, Joy Adamson’s House, is also fun, before returning to your lovely home
